These Great Blue Herons are a common sight down here along the coast. They’re funny birds. They love fish. When my kids were little they used to love to play chase with them down the beach. It was hilarious…the birds with their long-legged strut and the little ones toddling behind, their giggles carrying back on the breeze.

They can be a little bit of a nuisance, too. When we lived in Pensacola, I had a friend who had one of those decorative ponds in her backyard…one day she looked out her kitchen window just in time to see a huge blue heron gulping down her pricey Koi.

This one is a Great White Heron ( a close relative of the blue guy)
