Wildlife

I’ve been really jealous of the people who live on the other ponds in our neighborhood. They have ducks and turtles and stuff and ours was just…a pond. I even considered buying a couple of ducks for the pond. I love ducks. Maybe it goes back to the baby duck I got for Easter the year I was three. The cat ate him…that was the year I learned about the circle of life. But I digress. Ducks. On my pond!

When we got back from our little spring break trip the other day, I was ecstatic to see a family of ducks on our pond. My daughter and I grabbed the loaf of stale bread and ran down to feed the momma and daddy, hoping to lure them into staying. Apparently we also have big turtles now, too, which, I’ve been informed, like little ducks. And there’s a fox or two in the neighborhood…I saw one slinking across the street a month or so ago. And raccoons. We have those too. All things that are baaaaad for baby ducks. So, I’m praying that they survive, because they are so darn cute!

I feed them with bread .. they can come up close to use to grap the bread. It is fun to watch and feed them. God creates them. They are precious animals

    Terrie,
Where I grew up, we used to go all the time to the pond at the Museum of Art to feed the ducks and swan. The ducks were sweet, but the swans…look out! They would bite!

I love feeding them, too. They are adorable, especially these fuzzy little babies!

    Betty,
I think a LOT of NW Florida had unexpected ponds last week! One thing I can say is that the frogs are very, very happy. Have you heard the chorus they’ve been singing at night? Wowza!

Thanks for getting the book!! And I’ll definitely check out Barbara’s blog. I’m always good for an hour of procrastination. :)

    I’m torn between two reactions:

    1) Your very own private Easter chicks, roaming free in their natural habitat? It can’t get much better than that!

    2) Duck-eating turtles? AAAAAAAACKK!!!!

Hope your feathered friends stay safe!

Sounds like you have quite a bit of wildlife! We’ve got skunks, the neighborhood cat, and I think that’s about it.

What a precious picture, Steph! I had a yellow duck (named Willie) when I was a kid – as a matter of fact I got him for Easter. Thanks for reminding me of a very fun memory!
