Something New

As a book lover, I’ve sort of been against the idea of e-books. Rationally, I know that anything that gets the printed word into the hands of someone who wants to read it is a good thing. Emotionally, I’m tied to the way the printed page smells and feels…the way I hold a book, and flip the pages, flipping back if I’ve missed something. A book is a comfort object for me, always has been.
I’ve looked at e-readers before, but I’ve never been tempted. Until the Kindle. The idea of downloading pretty much any book-any time-anywhere was about more temptation than I could resist. I did resist, though, until I started seeing one of the other soccer moms carrying hers with her to the soccer tournaments. Downloading books at the field. My husband even wanted one. So, for Mother’s Day and his birthday, we got his and hers Kindles.
The Kindle works great for him because he reads mostly for work and mostly in hardback. His load will be considerably lighter. I guess you could say I read for work…I read tons, and truthfully, we have a really hard time figuring out what to do with all those books. So for different reasons, the Kindle makes sense for both of us.
I’ve only read one book on it so far…and the verdict is still out on how it stacks up. It was definitely different!

Steph,
I share your mixed feelings … and the urge to play with one of those Kindle thangs!
How much does it weigh?

I think it’s around 10 ounces? It’s lighter than a book and it’s about 1/3 an inch thick. Even with a cover it’s about the thickness of a magazine. It’s pretty amazing. It’s really easy to see outside, too. I wish my laptop was that easy to see in the sunlight.
