From past experience, I know that I tend to like single origin coffees better than blends, and I’m trying to buy more organic products for our family, so when I saw Seattle’s Best Organic Sumatra, I thought it would be the perfect pick for this week. I bought it at my local grocery store, so it’s widely available. Also, it’s commercially produced, so it has a long shelf life at the grocery store.

From the website, “A unique coffee that is rich and earthy with a magnificent herbal and cocoa finish. Seductive, smooth.”

In my opinion…
The good: The coffee does live up to its billing as rich and earthy. And, regardless of taste, I like that its organically grown.

The bad: The Sumatra was on the acidic side for me (medium, according to their website). I thought that the cocoa would give it a sweeter finish, but instead found it to be slightly bitter.

Final thoughts: I think if I buy Seattle’s Best again (and I will, because it’s one of the better brands at the grocery store) I’ll buy one of the blends. The extra dollar or two that it cost to buy this organic single origin coffee didn’t show in the taste. We have a Seattle’s Best cafe in the Borders store here in town too, too, and the coffee is almost always delicious. The Sumatra definitely wasn’t the fave, but I’ll keep trying.

In the meantime, there are sooooo many good coffees to sample!

You know, my mom bought some organic coffee ( a different brand) and when we tried it, it was very bitter and acidic. I wonder if it has anything to do with the organic part.

Hi Jeannie! I love your blog! I’m sorry you don’t drink coffee, but maybe we can convert you to the dark side. :)

I’ve never tried organic coffee before. I usually stick with Maxwell House and Folgers. I have purchased hazelnut flavored freshly ground beans from the Safeway grocery store years ago. I’ve also used flavored liquid creamer in my coffee.
Currently, I just use half-and-half and sugar in my Maxwell House or Folgers. I don’t drink flavored coffee very much anymore.
