Getting Old

Florida is famous for water sports: swimming, skiing, surfing, skimming. These sports are fun. They also make doctors rich.

A couple of years ago, we went out with some friends on their boat for a day on the river. Unfortunately, our trip ended rather abruptly because my husband thought it would be a good idea to water ski. (I have to interject here that my husband is very athletic, but hasn’t been water skiing since high school.) He tore his hamstring, which was not fun for him, not at all. The orthopedic doc later said with a little chuckle, “This is a pretty common injury in men your age.” Ouch.

So, fast forward two years. I’m the one at the ortho. I can’t lift my arm above the shoulder. Sudden movements are excruciating. The (young) doctor wants to know how I injured it. I started swimming every day…that’s it, just swimming. The doctor, with a little chuckle, started out: “At your age…”

Sigh.
